The Land

The Earth & Bloom Homestead

Working in Harmony with the Land

The Earth and Bloom homestead is built around one simple concept: we are stewards of the earth. This means we work in harmony with the land and share the responsibility for keeping it healthy and productive. Some days, things go exactly as planned, while most days require us to adjust to what is actually happening in front of us. Nature has its own direction, and when it shifts, we shift with it.

At the Earth and Bloom homestead, what grows here stays as close as possible to what naturally thrives in this environment, with a few exceptions like my Pink Lady apples. We follow the seasons, the condition of the plants, and what the land can support at any given time. We don’t just observe the land; we learn to read it. As the seasons progress, the ground changes with them. There are smaller shifts within each season that signal what is coming next, guiding when and how our natural farming methods are implemented.

We don’t use chemicals anywhere on the property because they disrupt the balance of the land and the wildlife that depends on it. This philosophy extends into our home, where we limit materials that introduce strain or imbalance, including unnecessary plastics and aluminum. Our goal is to foster an environment that contributes to health rather than working against it.

Wildlife is not restricted on our homestead; the land remains open and active, meaning it is shared. While this comes with trade-offs, it also creates balance. Plants reseed, insects fulfill their roles, and the ecosystem continues without constant correction. The land moves in cycles, and when those cycles are respected, the system stabilizes over time.

A portion of what is produced stays right where it came from. Roughly a third is left to feed the soil, insects, and everything else that keeps the land functioning. This return keeps the system in motion, allowing it to continue producing without depletion.

Permaculture practices guide how the Earth and Bloom homestead is built, but they are not treated as a rigid method. We use them to create a system where each part supports another. Instead of planting in long rows that require constant maintenance, we place plants in ways that benefit each other. Crops are spread throughout the land and paired with plants that naturally support or protect them, allowing the system to function with less interference.

Waste is kept to a minimum; what comes out of one process is used somewhere else whenever possible. Plant material, wax, oils, and remnants are transformed into inks, candles, soaps, and other products so that as much of the harvest as possible is put to use.

Our homestead is being developed into a food forest over time, utilizing native and heirloom plants that can sustain themselves and return year after year. The intention is to build something that grows stronger through its own structure.

Part of the land will also be expanded into a space where others can come to learn and participate in what is being built here. This area will develop into a non-profit extension of the homestead, focused on sharing both knowledge and harvest.

This is what stewardship looks like at the Earth and Bloom homestead. It is a working relationship with the land that evolves, adjusts, and strengthens over time.
